Agriculture, Fishing and Food and the autonomous communities monitor the temperature of livestock transport during the summer

It affects transport of more than 8 hours to other countries, both within and outside the European Union.

Between June 19 and until September 15, the competent authority at the place of origin will request the organizer of the trip to send the temperature records of the trip, along with the return of the logbook that he has to carry out. .

It will also ensure that the operator who manages the transfer has previously verified that the expected meteorological conditions make the trip possible and that the temperatures will remain inside the means of transport between 5 and 30 ºC, with a tolerance of ± 5 ºC in function of outside temperature. In the event that the records indicate that the temperatures exceeded 35 ºC, the corresponding sanction file will be processed.

The plan also includes a follow-up by the State, which will receive a final report from the autonomous communities. This document will reflect:

  • the number of trips rejected for not ensuring compliance with the relevant temperature levels
  • the number of trips made
  • that of those in which the temperature records were not returned within the established period
  • the number of disciplinary proceedings processed

On the other hand, in the case of trips in authorized vehicles for up to 12 hours that are not required to have a temperature recording system, the competent authority must ensure that the carrier takes the necessary measures so that the animals are adequately cared for.

Community legislation, which regulates the protection of animals during transport and related operations, establishes that in long journeys of live animals (equines, cattle, sheep, goats and pigs), it must be kept inside the vehicle, the indicated temperature range. For this, vehicles must be equipped with a temperature control system, provided with a device for recording this data.

In the same way, it establishes that means of transport will be used whose ventilation systems have been designed, built and maintained so that, at all times and regardless of whether the vehicle is stationary or moving, inside the means of transport it can be maintained the right temperature.
