Joint operation of the Civil Guard, National Police, the Tax Agency and Europol

Members of the Civil Guard, National Police and the Tax Agency, in cooperation with the Netherlands Police, the Estonian Police and the Portuguese Judicial Police, have arrested five individuals for committing a drug trafficking offense. by sea. The members of the organization tried to introduce more than half a ton of cocaine and other narcotic substances into Spain from Brazil through hidden habitats housed in a pleasure craft identified as IMAGINE owned by a Dutch company registered in the name of one of the members.

This investigation was initiated on the occasion of an International Judicial Assistance initiated by request of International Cooperation of other countries of the European Union, which allowed to know and detect the previous activities that were being developed from Spain.
Initially in the town of Barcelona, where the event that triggers the beginning of this research takes place, and later during the year 2018 in the cities of Valencia, Huelva, Granada and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, different meetings between the members took place of the criminal organization that allowed to identify the members of the same, as well as the logistics infrastructure and international connections with other countries such as the Netherlands, Estonia, Brazil, United Kingdom or Portugal that evidenced a clear will to carry out the detected activities.
In May 2018, the criminal organization, from the Port of Valencia in Spain, made various administrative and technical procedures for the implementation of the IMAGINE vessel and its provisioning, prior to starting a navigation that had as its itinerary Valencia and Las Palmas from Gran Canaria (Spain), Fortaleza, Natal, Salvador de Bahia, Rio de Janeiro and Itajaí (Brazil) and back to the Azores Islands (Portugal), where he was intervened by the police authorities of Portugal at the request of Spain and the Netherlands.
Spain turned out to be an ideal territory from which to carry out transport activities and use as a gateway to Europe the narcotic substances intended for its traffic, although it was in the Netherlands where its members resided and cooled the operation until the moment was found suitable to be executed, which has required almost two years.
As security measures, it is known that the organization had security telephones used exclusively to materialize its criminal activities, a fact that greatly hindered both police work and its follow-up through the countries to which they traveled to advance the operation. Likewise, innumerable displacements were detected by land, sea and air, always using different airports and ports at their origin and destination, always traveling separately to avoid being related, and continuously and suddenly modifying the routes declared to the maritime authorities of the countries under whose jurisdiction the vessel sailed, trying at all times to interpose elements of distraction.
On July 10, 2019, through different international cooperation tools at the judicial and police level between the countries involved, and after detecting the displacement of the vessel to Europe, a coordinated police action was carried out that aimed at the interception of the boat and its crew, resulting in the arrest so far of five people as members of the criminal organization (an Estonian nationality, a British and two Dutch), practicing seven house searches, and intervening the boat, electronic and digital evidence, half a ton of cocaine, 520 gr of glass, and a 9mm firearm with the serial number erased, as well as cash and nautical material (documents, nautical charts, GPS and satellite phones).
The operation has been carried out by agents of the Civil Guard, National Police Corps and the Deputy Directorate of Customs Surveillance of the Tax Agency, in cooperation with the Dutch Central Criminal Investigation Division of the Netherlands Police, Estonian Police and the Judicial Police of Portugal, coordinated by the Center for Maritime Analysis and Operations in the field of Drug Trafficking (MAOC-N) and Europol, in an investigation led by the Court of Instruction No. 2 of those of Orihuela (Alicante).
