The PP spokeswoman in the European Parliament, Dolors Montserrat, asked today that the fight against cancer be one of the main priorities of the next European Commission, which will begin its five-year term on November 1, and implement the plan proposed in this regard by the group of the European People's Party ( PPE).

In a debate in the Plenary session of the European Parliament on this issue, Montserrat recalled that the coordinated fight at European level against cancer has been a priority for the EPP group, which has proposed a Plan in this regard, and has addressed the new president of the European Commission and also a member of the popular European, Úrsula von der Leyen, to make this fight one of the main axes of her mandate at the head of the Community Executive.

To insist on this goal, Dolors Montserrat met today in Strasbourg with Stella Kyriakidou, appointed as the next European Commissioner for Health.

"We need to have a European approach" to overcome this disease, said Montserrat in the plenary session of the Eurocamara, and for this "we must continue to improve prevention and early detection, increase investment in research, equity in access to treatments in all corners of Europe, and improve the humanization of patient care so that it is comprehensive and encompasses from the medical to the social side. ”

The popular spokeswoman and president of the Committee on Petitions of the European Parliament recalled that “despite the harsh reality of cancer, and that 1.4 million Europeans will lose their lives this year because of this disease, there are reasons for hope, since between 30 and 50% of cancers are preventable, and mortality has dropped 10%. ”

To continue advancing in this struggle, he recalled, “we must promote a healthy diet, take care of the air we breathe, we must move away from sedentary lifestyle and smoking, but we must also take care of the mental health of our society: stress, depression, anxiety , in short, the fast-paced pace of life we lead. ”
