PP MEP and president of the Committee on Petitions of the European Parliament, Dolors Montserrat, said today that "the best response to nationalism and populism is the defense of the right state of the European Union and its member states."

"You can not build any democratic project or freedom or equality without respecting the rules that we all have given," said Montserrat during the debate in the European Parliament on the program of Finland for his EU presidency in this second semester of the year.

Montserrat recalled that this presidency coincides with a period of change in the EU, following the election yesterday of Ursula Von der Leyen as president of the European Commission, and with the start of the new European legislature.

A new period that begins positively with the election of the first woman president of the European Commission. Montserrat has placed value on the commitment to female leadership of the EPP to build a more egalitarian society: "with the female leadership of Von der Leyen we will continue working for the real and effective equality of men and women in Europe".

The popular MEP has asked the Prime Minister of Finland, Antti Rinne, present in today's debate, that his presidency should promote "a stronger, more united and more secure Europe".
