Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge launches the #Biodirectos cycle to raise awareness about the role biodiversity plays in human health and the opportunities offered by green reconstruction

#Biodirectos is a series of online meetings, broadcast live and simultaneously on the different social media channels (Twitter, Facebook and YouTube) of theBiodiversity Foundation.

The objective of these meetings, organized by the Ministry through the Biodiversity Foundation, is to raise awareness of the important role that biodiversity plays in relation to human health, as well as to discuss various topics related to the opportunities offered by a green reconstruction after the global crisis generated by COVID-19.

This cycle will consist of various meetings, in some of which representatives of MITECO will participate, and will be held over the coming months.

Biodiversity: ally to stop pandemics

The first meeting "Biodiversity: allied to stop pandemics" will take place on May 22, coinciding with the celebration of the International Day for Biological Diversity. It will begin at 12 noon, lasting one hour, and will aim to establish a debate on the effects of biodiversity loss and its link to the emergence and spread of pandemics such as the one we are experiencing.

In this first Biodirecto, which will be moderated by the political scientist and sociology professor Cristina Monge, the general director of Biodiversity, Forests and Desertification of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Jorge Marquínez, will participate. Also participating will be Fernando Valladares, scientist at the CSIC, and Julio Díaz, expert at the National School of Health of the Carlos III Health Institute.

Possible solutions to the sanitary and environmental crisis

This series of meetings gives voice to the opinions of contrasted experts from various fields, with the aim of seeking solutions to the main challenges that we face as a society, the health and environmental crisis. Thus, the next events will focus on the opportunities that a green reconstruction offers us, how to prevent future pandemics by reinforcing the control of illegal species trafficking, on the importance of maintaining a balance in the health of marine ecosystems, or how it is facing this crisis in the green entrepreneurship sector, paying special attention to the initiatives of the Green Entrepreneur Network.
