Health recalls that it is prohibited to market menthol tobacco products

Thus ends the moratorium established by the European Union for products with a characteristic aroma referred to in article 5.5 of the RD 579/2017 either as an aroma present in its composition or in filter dosing capsules.

This decision is based on the commitment of the Member States in the fight against smoking, reflected in the Directive 2014/40 / EU. The fundamental reason for it is that these products favor the introduction of new tobacco users, especially young people, and make it difficult to quit.

The menthol included in the product serves to mask the bitter taste of burning tobacco. In addition, it has an anesthetic effect and is capable of numbing the mouth and throat. It also has decongestant and refreshing properties of the mucous membranes, so it masks the irritating effect, itching and congestion of the upper respiratory tract caused by smoke, making it more acceptable for young people who are starting to consume and favoring a return to consumption.

Menthol also has a dilating effect on the pulmonary alveoli. This causes a faster absorption of nicotine from tobacco by the consumer, which has a powerful addictive effect. This indirectly increases the addictive potential of the product as a whole.

These flavors and aromas therefore increase the attractiveness of the product and there is a false perception that they are healthier or less harmful than other cigarettes or rolling tobacco. Therefore, there are some consumers who choose this alternative instead of leaving it permanently, which negatively affects their health and quality of life.

Failure to comply with this rule constitutes a serious administrative offense as set forth in article 19.3 w) of the Law 28/2005, of December 26, of sanitary measures against smoking and regulating the sale, supply, consumption and advertising of tobacco products.
