The acting Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, has inaugurated the III Seminar on Leadership and Communication in Emergencies, organized by the Military Emergency Unit (UME), in collaboration with the Chair of Security and Emergencies and Catastrophes of the University of Malaga.

In this edition, the theme of the debate is "For the environment: sUMEmos", and the objective is to share knowledge about the importance of the action of the leader and the management of communication for the resolution of emergencies, paying special attention to the environment .

"It is a great satisfaction to see the link that exists between the Armed Forces and society," Robles said in reference to the public attending the seminar.

"It is essential and fundamental that citizens know that the Armed Forces are present every day, at every moment, in difficult moments, when there is an emergency, a tragedy or a catastrophe, and that they know that the UME always works together with other institutions , organisms and security bodies to help citizens, "said the minister.

In this regard, he recalled the performance of the UME in the channel of the Guadalquivir to control the camalote and said that "the future is to take care of our environment, which is one of the great pending issues."

Miguel Alcañíz, UME's chief lieutenant general, and Antonio Puerto, colonel director of the Military Emergency School, also spoke at the opening of the seminar.

Leadership and communication

The UME has institutionalized these conferences in order to offer managers support tools based on the use of communication skills and other utilities that strengthen their skills as leaders. This is: provide those people who have to exercise leadership in crisis situations, the skills and competencies to lead teams effectively, understanding the influence that communication exerts on them.

The central axis chosen for this conference has been the environment and will address topics such as leadership in the 21st century, the art of leadership, the environment in the communication society, leadership and communication for sustainable development, among others.

The lectures, workshops and round tables scheduled will be carried out by experts in leadership and communication in the military and civil fields. In addition, it will bring together renowned specialists and professionals from the world of communication such as Miguel Aguado, environmental disseminator in La Sexta and Onda Cero; Jacob Petrus, presenter of TVE's Aquí la Tierra program; Luis Arroyo, director of Public Communication Advisors; and Ángel Expósito, presenter of the La Linterna program in Cope, among others.

The Secretary of State for Defense, Ángel Olivares, was also present at the event; the delegate of the Government in the Community of Madrid, María Paz García Vega; and the president of Spanish Red Cross, Javier Senent.

The conference will take place in the auditorium of the Military Emergency Unit (UME), from Monday until Friday, June 14.
