On Sunday, September 1, the European emission measurement regulation RDE for all combustion vehicles enters into force. If since last year, all new vehicle registrations already meet the consumption and emissions standards set by the WLTP (consumption and CO2) and RDE (for particles) regulations, as of this Sunday, the new vehicles comply with the RDE regulations for measuring its nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions.

The RDE (Real Driving Emissions) standard is the first worldwide test that is carried out directly on the road and that aims to measure and control these pollutant emissions of NOx and particles under real driving conditions. The RDE does not replace the WLTP (Harmonized Global Procedure for Light Vehicle Testing), but complements it. It is the most demanding standard in the world. Only Europe has implemented controls of this type with emission limits that will be reduced over time. It is a great leap in the evaluation of car emissions and affects all combustion vehicles.

The commitment of the automotive industry
The automotive industry is fully committed to these new stricter regulations. In the last 15 years, technological innovation has progressively helped to reduce the limits of NOx and diesel engine particles. The new filters are highly efficient and eliminate 99.9% of particles including ultrafine. In addition, vehicles emit up to 84% less NOx than vehicles from 15 years ago.

Regarding the RDE, the application dates for new registrations are as follows: • Particle Measurement. September 1, 2018: passenger cars and smaller vans. 1 year later for larger vans. 2 • NOx. September 1, 2019: for passenger cars and smaller vans (1 year later for larger vans). In 2021, more demanding limits for NOx emissions will be introduced.
