August 30, 2019. A Canine Guides patrol deployed in the MINERVA’19 operation has discovered 900 kilos of hashish inside a van. Operation MINERVA’19 began on July 12 and aims to strengthen border inspections to combat illegal immigration and cross-border crime, including the terrorist threat. Their interventions have increased by 10.8% over last year and, so far, more than 1,400,000 border inspections have been carried out on travelers and 300,000 vehicles. A FRONTEX delegation has visited the deployed agents as well as the focal points for the operational activities financed by the European Agency in Spanish territory.

The seizure took place last week. A guide of Canine Guides, composed of a Spanish agent and another Finnish, proceeded to inspect a vehicle at the entrance filter of the port of Algeciras from Tangier, discovering more than 900 kilos of hashish hidden inside. The vehicle had been fully manipulated to hide merchandise that was compacted in more than 2,600 packages. The two citizens were arrested for a crime against public health.

Increase in interventions by 10.8%

This intervention happened within the framework of the MINERVA’19 operation that began on July 12 and where European police from 16 member states participate, all of them led by the National Police. Its objective is to strengthen border inspections to fight illegal immigration and cross-border crime. A total of 1,803 incidents have been recorded – an increase of 10.8% over the previous year – related to the evasion of border control, individuals hidden in vehicles and documentary falsehoods. 2,029 irregular immigrants have been involved, 101 of them being minors. After the interventions, 216 people were arrested.

It should be noted that since the beginning of MINERVA, 32 people related to Islamic terrorism activities have been investigated, which represents an increase of 300% compared to last year. So far, more than 1,400,000 passenger inspections and 300,000 vehicles have been carried out by the borders of Ceuta, Algeciras and Tarifa

A delegation of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency “FRONTEX” visited the coordination centers of the operational activities financed by the European Agency in the Spanish territory on August 28, 29 and 30. They also went to the border posts of the port of Algeciras, Ceuta and Tarifa to meet the agents deployed there and see the work done by the experts.
