June 27, 2019 National Police agents monitor the sky of the city of Madrid and reinforce its security through an artificial intelligence system that detects the location of drones. In the last two months, 545 flights of 195 unmanned aerial vehicles have been detected. The anti-drone test method of the Spanish company ASDT has allowed us to find out, thanks to artificial intelligence, the exact place where the pilots are located in order to neutralize illegal flights. Thanks to the preventive and protective work carried out by the agents of the National Police, flights have been detected between 200 meters high and 450 meters, which pose a real danger to air services. The Law of Citizen Security and the Law of Air Navigation collect sanctions proposals of up to 90,000 euros depending on the severity and the risk produced by the unmanned aircraft.
Among the preventive work carried out by the National Police is the function of enforcing the current regulations on drone flight, in order to safeguard the sky of our cities from any danger caused by unmanned aircraft. Thus, in the last two months, 545 flights of 195 drones have been detected over the city of Madrid, cases in which agents specialized in this field have had to intervene to identify the pilots due to the irregularities detected.
For the specific location of the offending pilots the National Police is using an artificial intelligence system that is in evidence belonging to the company ASDT. Once the offending flight has been seen and the location of the person who controls it from a distance has been found, the agents can identify the pilot and make the proposal for sanction according to current regulations. The infractions committed by these human guides can reach according to the current legislation up to 90,000 euros depending on the severity and the risk produced by the flight of the unmanned aircraft.
A pilot located on the terrace of a hotel
In the last two months and thanks to artificial technology, all pilots of the 195 drones that were flying outside the regulations have been located. Even the location of those offenders who were in less accessible places such as the terrace of a hotel, the interior of an establishment or the balcony of an address has been ascertained. In addition, the height of the flights detected by the agents has in many cases exceeded that allowed by the legislation, which poses a danger to the air services that fly over the capital. Specifically 30 flights have exceeded 200 meters, even one of them reached 450 meters high.
To avoid possible infractions – described in the Air Navigation Law and the Citizen Security Law – that may compromise the airspace of our cities, the National Police recommends following the regulations in force when piloting any type of drone.
