Pedro Duque calls for cooperation in Europe to face the challenges of space

Duque recalled that Europe has before it a great opportunity to consolidate its industrial and scientific leadership in space.

The European Union, the European Space Agency (ESA), the member countries, EUMETSAT (European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites), ECMWF (European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts) participated in the plenary session of the European Space Conference ), representatives of the space industry and research centers, among others.

The Minister of Science and Innovation has called for a common effort and understanding to strengthen the great operational programs in Europe (Galileo, Copernicus …) and to avoid duplication of public efforts to obtain the highest return on government investment. The minister highlighted the work of Spain during the presidency of the ESA, which led to the agreements to approve the largest investment in the history of the agency -14,000 million euros- and reactivated the EU-ESA Space Council, which It had not been held for eight years.

The European space policy is a key tool to improve the lives of citizens, the minister recalled, and poses great challenges for the public and private sector.
