Planas emphasizes that the "work valuation" of Spanish farmers and ranchers will be one of the main areas of action of the Ministry


This is the first meeting he holds after his new appointment as Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and as proof of the willingness to dialogue and search for solutions that guide the action of the new Government of Spain.

In statements to the media, Luis Planas said that "the reputation, the valorization of work" of Spanish farmers and ranchers will be one of the main areas of action of the Ministry. Therefore, the minister considers it essential to explain to citizens that producing sufficient food in quantity and quality, that meets the standards and at a reasonable price, "is a very complicated task, which involves a lot of work by our farmers and ranchers," and That has to be duly recognized.

He has reiterated the commitment of the Government of Spain to dialogue with the sector to, "hand in hand", offer solutions and necessary reforms, in the medium and long term, with a perspective offered by a 4-year term.

CAP Reform

For the minister, this year will be key in the process of reforming the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Planas has stressed the firm commitment of the Government to defend the maintenance of the funds of this policy as a tool of stability and future for the sector, especially taking into account the greater environmental ambition of this policy.

He has also shown his intention to present in this first semester the conclusions of the work carried out with the autonomous communities and agricultural and environmental professional organizations in relation to the identification of the needs of the future CAP and its application in Spain, in order to elaborate of a first draft of the Strategic Plan. In this sense, Planas has pointed out that professional and family agriculture is "a reference model to which we must address".

Likewise, Planas has referred to the normative perspectives for the next legislature, in whose scope he has mentioned the transposition of the community directive on unfair commercial practices, through the updating of the food chain law. He has also indicated that measures will be implemented to improve the application of the shared ownership law.

In relation to the tariffs imposed on certain agri-food products, Planas recalled that the Government has asked the European Commission for maximum firmness in its negotiations with the United States. "We hope that these tariffs will be neutralized and may disappear because they are an absolutely unfair burden on our agri-food sector," he stressed.

On the situation of the olive oil market, the minister has indicated that in a few days the third tender for private storage will begin, where the Government is trying to make the Commission understand the need to store enough volume that favors stabilization and rising prices.

During the meeting, the roadmaps of other sectors such as wine and citrus have also been reviewed, as well as possible initiatives for the bone fruit or intensive horticulture sectors.
