At the end of the month, the list of people registered with the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) has added 302,265 new applicants in March compared to February. It represents an increase of 9.31%.
The total of unemployed, computing this rise, stands at 3,548,312.
Due to the impact of COVID-19, in seasonally adjusted terms, the number of enrollees has increased by 311,037 people in March compared to the previous month.
Annual evolution
In the third month of the year, the number of people unemployed on the SEPE lists has increased by 293,228 workers compared to March last year. Assumes a rate of increase of 9.01%.
Distribution by sex
Male unemployment increases by 178,967 people (grows by 13.26%) and reaches a total of 1,528,942 unemployed. The number of unemployed workers increased by 123,298 people (6.50% more) compared to the previous month, which leaves the record of female unemployment at 2,019,370 women. The growth rate of male unemployment is double that of women.
In year-on-year terms, the comparison with March 2019 indicates that male unemployment increases by 190,045 (14.19%) people and female unemployment increases by 103,183 (5.38%).
Benefits
The coverage rate of unemployed people increases by 6.5%, to 64.95%. Three out of five unemployed receive a benefit.
A total of 2,002,295 unemployed people received benefits in the second month of the year, which represents an increase of 5.5% compared to the same month the previous year.
The beneficiaries have received, on average in the month of February, € 926.4, 7.2% more than in February 2019. The agricultural subsidies of Andalusia and Extremadura are excluded from the calculation.
Public employment services have processed 566,782 benefits in the second month of the year, 1.4% more than in February 2019.
The total cost of benefits for February 2020 has risen to 1,811 million euros, representing an increase of 13.2% compared to the same month the previous year.
Unemployment behavior by sector
Compared to the month of February, Agriculture adds 6,520 more unemployed (+ 4.26%); unemployment rises in the Industry in 25,194 people (+ 9.15%); in Construction increases by 59,551 unemployed (+ 22.92%). But it is in the Services sector where it increases the most in absolute terms, with
206,016 (+ 8.97%) new registrants. Finally, in the group without Previous Employment, unemployment indicates 4,984 (+ 1.91%) new applicants.
Youth unemployment
Regarding youth, unemployment among those under 25 years of age increased by 26,112 people (9.99%) in relation to the previous month, while unemployment of 25 and over rose by 276,153 (9.25%).
Community registration
Registered unemployment rises in the 17 autonomous communities. Andalusia (138,569), Valencian Community (35,565) and Catalonia (21,833) lead the rise in the number of unemployed people registered in the employment services.
Types of signed contracts
The total number of contracts registered during the month of March was 1,256,510. There are 453,338 (-26.51%) fewer contracts than in the same month of 2019.
The figure breaks the trend with which the month began since only between March 1 and 9, 531,478 contracts had been registered, 3,848 more than those of the first nine days of March of the previous year.
Of the total number of contracts registered in March, 145,393 were permanent contracts and 1,111,117 temporary contracts.
Regarding the duration of the day, 89,309 contracts signed in March were full-time. There are 19,446 (-17.88%) indefinite full-time contracts less than the previous year. 56,084 indefinite part-time contracts were signed in the same month. There are 14,982 (-21.08%) fewer contracts of this type than in March 2019.
