With this application, Spain seeks to strengthen itself as a benchmark in cybersecurity
June 2, 2020.- The Council of Ministers has approved the candidacy of the city of León to host the headquarters of the European Center for Industrial Competition, Technology and Research in Security (European Cybersecurity Industrial, Technology and Research Competence Center). Thus, the Government of Spain is committed to a digital Europe that is open, fair, diverse, democratic, and also more secure.
The European Cybersecurity Center is the main instrument of the European Union to pool research in cybersecurity, an area in which Spain occupies a reference position through the National Institute of Cybersecurity (INCIBE), whose headquarters are located in Leon.
Precisely, the European Cybersecurity Center would strengthen León, the autonomous community of Castilla y León, and Spain as a 'Cybersecurity Innovation Hub' at a European level, since, at present, the city is already an important node in terms of information technologies and cybersecurity.
It is expected that throughout the year the community institutions will adopt a decision on the city that will host this center.
This application represents a further step to strengthen Spain's position as a benchmark country in the cybersecurity sector, a strategic area that has experienced a growth in revenue volume of 7% during 2019 and is expected to increase by 15% in the future. throughout 2020.
The number of companies in the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) and Content sectors in Spain continues to grow, currently exceeding 35,000.
Enclave suitability
The city of León and the environment that configures the region of Castilla y León, both in business terms, as well as in education –with historical and highly prestigious universities- or health services, constitute an ideal enclave for the location of this center.
It has an important technological business network and a first-rate infrastructure network, such as the León Technology Park or the National Cluster of Cybersecurity Companies.
To this are added infrastructures, with airports, high-speed rail networks with connection to the main Spanish cities or the high-capacity road network.
