The Spanish food and beverage industry focuses its attention on the Japanese market as part of its internationalization strategy in the Asian continent. Thus, Spanish companies exhibit their products in the Supermarket Trade Show 2020, one of the most important fairs in the sector held in Tokyo until February 15.

These are up to 21 companies representing the sectors of meat products, wine, olive oil, table olives, preserves or sweet, among others, which show their gastronomic offer in the Spanish Group Pavilion, organized by the Spanish Federation of Industries of Food and Beverages (FIAB) with the support of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

On February 1, the first anniversary of the entry into force of the EU-Japan Economic Association Agreement (EPA). Since its entry into force, Japan eliminated customs duties for more than 90% of EU agri-food exports, which have been increased in this first year of application.

Specifically, there is a significant growth in Spanish exports of food and beverage products to this market, which is the 8th destination of our exports globally. In the period January-November 2019 (latest available data), with 883 million euros, our exports show a notable increase of 12.6%, compared to the growth of only 1.5% during the same period in 2018 .

In the mentioned period, the high growth of the 3 main categories of products that we export most to Japan stands out: pork with 468.8 million euros (+ 15.7%), olive oil with 139.4 million euros (+21 , 2%) and came with 94 million euros (+ 20.3%).

Likewise, other product categories that show a notable increase are spirits with 6.2 million euros (+ 61.1%), olives with 4.4 million euros (+ 9.5%) or cocoa products with 2 , 1 million euros (+ 27.5%).

The organic product gains strength for Spanish exporters

These days the organic products market meets in BIOFACH 2020, held in Nuremberg and bringing together 22 Spanish industries in this international fair until next February 15.

The offer of organic products has undergone great growth in recent years, and enjoys great acceptance among direct sales marketing channels, as well as in the Horeca and internet. The organic products market has become a trend of current consumption and already moves a business of 10,000 million euros in Europe, according to data from the International Trade Center.

FIAB together with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food attends this event for the second time to boost the Spain Brand and accompany companies that want to launch a specialized offer in this niche, and that includes vegetable products, preserves, oils and meat products.

The participation of these companies in the Spanish pavilions is part of the more than 25 international promotion activities for the food and beverage sector promoted by FIAB as part of their commitment to strengthen and extend the presence of Spanish companies in international markets.

“Our food enjoys a privileged position in other countries thanks to the variety and quality of our products and participating in this type of events provides greater added value to an offer that already stands out and attracts the interest of the markets international ”, said Mauricio García de Quevedo, general director of FIAB.
