The Ministry of Culture and Sports achieves its best results in the fight against Internet piracy


Throughout its activity since 2012, this collegiate body (colloquially called the Anti-Piracy Section), whose Secretariat is attached to the Ministry of Culture and Sports, has received a total of 671 complaints from the authors and cultural creators who saw its contents as they were being exploited without their authorization on the Net.

The global number of websites affected by the actions of the Anti-Piracy Section amounts to 677. Currently, more than 94% of pirated websites have ceased their infringing activity after the execution of the measures imposed by this collegiate body.

The Anti-Piracy Section publishes quarterly a list of more than 267 domain names that have been the subject of its final resolutions, which may, for example, contribute to reducing the financing of these domains through advertising.

More than two million euros in seized material

On the other hand, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior, the State Security Forces and Corps (FCSE) seized in 2019 from 28,120 articles that violated intellectual property rights and which are valued at 2,091,538 euros. 40% of these requisitioned objects were optical media and digital storage devices such as CDs and DVDs.

During 2019, the FCSE investigated a total of 262 possible infringements of the Intellectual Property Law that affected 240 alleged infringers. The investigations allowed to clarify 194 of the cases, 74 percent.

The 2019 balance reflects that most of the police seizures have been carried out in public establishments or premises (20.73%); secondly, they occurred in the customs areas of ports and airports (20.23%), and, thirdly, in private homes (18.97%).

More pirated objects seized in Catalonia, Madrid and Andalusia

According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, Andalusia (with 49 actions), Catalonia (with 48) and Madrid (43) are the Autonomous Communities in which more investigations have been opened in the past year.
