This Friday, November 20, the Princess Room of the María Guerrero Theater hosts the absolute premiere of this piece that reveals human emotion and vulnerability beyond ages, genders and eras
Tomas Cabané is the author and director of the text, in which Tomás Pozzi has collaborated, who plays the role of Amanda in this dramatic monologue
Dear whim speaks of waiting, fear of rejection or prejudice towards intergenerational love through the monologue of a mature woman who tires of waiting for the call of the young man with whom she has fallen in love
Dear whim It is the “most personal and intimate” project of all those who have approached together Thomas Cabané and Tomas Pozzi. The young director and playwright and the Argentine interpreter present this work that they have written in tandem and that, based on the monologue of a mature woman waiting for a call from her young lover who will never arrive, calls into question a whole series of stereotypes and taboos social.
The origin dates back to 2018, Cabané says, “when Pozzi expressed his desire to me to return to being a woman on stage”. Starting from feelings that we have all experienced at some time, such as the fear of rejection, of being left alone and waiting for that promise that never comes, “the need arose to begin to disrupt that idea of romantic love that has been instilled in us since childhood, especially in the female universe ”, adds the director. Thus, using as a framework the intergenerational love between a young man and a mature woman, “something that still contains many taboos and prejudices”, the creative couple uses “Amanda's journey to deconstruct some of these myths, hit rock bottom, feel that anguish , revisit our personal ties and move forward ”, Cabané points out.
It is not the first time that Tomás Pozzi has played a female character, but as Cabané affirms, "we decided that this time it was going to be different, we did not want a costume, but to get to the essence of this woman." Amanda, the protagonist of Dear whim, "Believes in love as something idealized, the result of what they expect of her and the education she received together with her sister," says Pozzi, while highlighting the evolution of the character: "However, this confinement awakens her side more vindictive and her right to be alone. He begins to deny everything he has learned and to build a new path where love is no longer a problem, but a whim. Extract its most sentimental part and live it as something more liberating ”.
Dear whim it is narrated as a kind of confession, of confidence shared with the public, who, locked up with the character, is accompanying Amanda throughout her liberating journey. Tomás Cabané, who cites other ‘captive’ women in literature as references, such as Doña Rosita la soltera, Ella de Human voice or the mythical Penelope, paraphrasing Pozzi's own character in the play, who says: "Amanda is a cry in the real world, Amanda exists, I heard her in the messages from my mother's friends."
Co-produced by the Centro Dramático Nacional together with Check-In Producciones and Pedro Hermosilla Producciones, the play opens this Friday, November 20 in the Sala de la Princesa of the María Guerrero Theater, where it will run until December 13.
