The number of employees increased by 469,900 people in the second quarter of 2018, according to data from the Active Population Survey (EPA) prepared by the National Statistics Institute (INE). This quarterly increase is the largest of the entire historical series of the EPA (it has been prepared since 1976) and has allowed 19.3 million employees to be reached, the highest figure since the last quarter of 2008 and very close to the target planned for the whole year.
The number of unemployed has been reduced by 306,000 people in the second quarter, standing below 3.5 million for the first time since the end of 2008. In the last twelve months unemployment has been reduced by 424,200 people with a reduction of 10 , 84%. The unemployment rate stands at 15.28%, 1.46 points less than in the previous quarter and is reduced by almost two points in the last year. With seasonally adjusted series, unemployment decreases 4.09% in the second quarter compared to the previous quarter, compared to the 3.13% reduction of the previous period, linking more than five years of uninterrupted declines.
The data of the Survey of Active Population confirm the recovery of the labor market, reaching levels of occupation similar to those of the end of 2008 but still far from the maximum prior to the crisis. Unemployment continues to fall at interannual rates above 10% and the creation of jobs is consolidated at a rate of more than 500,000 annually (530,800 in the last twelve months), which will reach 20 million employed in 2020.
The data for the second quarter show the continuity in the positive evolution of the labor market and the strength of the Spanish economy. To the historical increase in the number of employed, it must be added that it has been generalized in all the Autonomous Communities. By sectors employment is created mainly in services (371,400) followed by construction and industry. It should also be noted that the increase occurs in all age groups, with more than 55 years being the one that increases the most. The temporary employment rate stands at 26.8%, 69 cents higher than in the first quarter and similar to that of a year ago.
With seasonally adjusted series, employment has grown by 1% in the second quarter in quarterly terms, a rate higher by four tenths than the previous quarter and the highest in the last three years. In the last twelve months, employment has increased by 530,800 people, 2.82%, which means an acceleration of almost half a point compared to the first quarter.
In the last year, the number of households with all their active members unemployed has decreased by 164,500 and those with all their assets occupied have increased by 310,500.
