Those employed in the tourism sector accounted for 14.3% of the total employment of the Spanish economy, while the unemployment rate stood at 10.7%. In addition, in the third quarter of 2019 the number of employees in tourism grew 4.5% year-on-year to 2,361,266, contributing 83.4% of the total.
Especially in this quarter, indefinite hiring stands out, since employees with this type of contract increased by 8.2% – 64% of total contracts – while employees who work with a temporary contract decreased (-1.4 %).
For the Secretary of State for Tourism, Isabel Oliver, "these positive data show the improvement in the quality of employment and working conditions and consolidate the growing trend in the number of employees with an indefinite contract to the detriment of other more precarious formulas."
In relation to the type of working day, full-time employees increased by 5.9% and already represent 77.2% of the total, compared to employees with part-time work, which grew by only 0.1%.
By autonomous communities
The Autonomous Communities with the highest number of tourist flows (Catalonia, Andalusia, the Community of Madrid, the Canary Islands and the Valencian Community) are, in turn, the ones that generate the busiest in the sector, joining together in the fourth quarter of the year 75 , 2% of the total employed in the sector.
They stand out for the growth in the number of employed in tourism La Rioja (21.7%), Ceuta and Melilla (16.3%), Extremadura (12%) and Cantabria (11.2%), while Murcia, Balearic Islands and Navarra were the communities where the most employed decreased compared to the same quarter of the previous year.
