The SEPRONA of the Civil Guard receives the Human Rights award from the Spanish Advocacy

The award recognizes the work of 2,000 civil guards working in the defense and protection of nature

So far this year, SEPRONA has detected more than 3,000 crimes against the environment, 80% already clarified

The Nature Protection Service (SEPRONA) of the Civil Guard has received today the Human Rights award granted by the General Council of Spanish Law.

The award granted in the category "Institutions" has been collected by the head of Seprona, the division general Antonio Tocón. The general director of the Civil Guard, Félix Azón, among other authorities has also been present.

This award recognizes the work of the 2,000 civil guards assigned to this specific service dedicated to the protection of the environment. In this sense, Spain was the first country to have a specific environmental research unit. This fact has been analyzed these days at the Climate Summit held in Madrid, in which SEPRONA has exposed its police model in the defense of flora and fauna.

In his thank-you speech, General Tocón stressed that this award represents “a plus of satisfaction” for the Civil Guard on its 175th anniversary. Tocón has highlighted the “constant” evolution of SEPRONA both in the number of troops and in the capacities and areas of action. What was initially conceived as an "eminently rural" unit, has now become "a benchmark" in areas as diverse as the fight against pollution, waste management, animal health or food security.

30 years protecting nature

Founded in 1988, SEPRONA has pioneered investigations such as the fight against trade in substances that affect the ozone layer, in operations worldwide with illegal fishing or in the pursuit of illegal eel trafficking.

At the training level, the Civil Guard develops activities throughout the national territory to promote behaviors that respect nature and the environment, both with lectures in colleges and university masters.
