Madrid, August 3, 2020. – The Interior Ministry has tripled subsidies to African countries to contain irregular immigration. In fact, Morocco received in August last year, in addition to the amounts that the European Union this year already reaches 101.7 million euros.

Thus, given the economic amounts that the African continent has received, the senator of VOX for Ceuta, Yolanda Merelo, asked the Government how and when Spain is going to demand from the countries that receive subsidies, and especially from Morocco, the maritime control of the boats that leave their coasts and cross the Mediterranean in search of the Spanish coasts.

As Merelo explains in his writing, it is Morocco where most of the boats come from and from where the assaults are carried out on our North African Sovereignty Squares, the Autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla.

In fact, on the weekend of July 25 and 26, some 1,180 people were rescued by Sea Rescue in waters of the Strait and the Alboran Sea, many of them infected by Coronavirus.

The senator denounces that, in addition, the CÍES are still closed, so that illegal immigrants roam uncontrollably through Spanish cities, as is the case in Almería. "All this is accentuated by the suspension of the returns of illegal immigrants due to the pandemic," criticizes Merelo.

For this reason, it has also asked the Executive:

  • What responsibilities are these countries going to be required in the face of a lack of zeal in fulfilling their obligations regarding immigration control and fighting the mafias?
  • What plans does the government have for these people in view of the economic situation in Spain?
  • How does the Government control the epidemiological situation of these people who have reached our coasts and have not been intercepted by our Security Forces and Bodies?
