The Civil Guard detains the alleged perpetrator of the forest fire in the Guadarrama National Park last summer
The fire destroyed almost 400 hectares of vegetation
After almost a year of investigation, the SEPRONA team of the Segovia Civil Guard has brought the alleged author to justice
The Civil Guard has arrested, on June 16, the alleged perpetrator of the fire that occurred last summer in the vicinity of the Royal Site of San Idelfonso. The operation called "Madrejita", aimed at clarifying the authorship of this environmental disaster, has lasted a total of eleven months.
From the first moments of the investigation, the hypothesis of the intentionality of the event was considered, ruling out accidental or reckless causes. However, it was necessary to continue with the investigations aimed at determining its authorship, with the preparation of different reports and actions in which different specialties of the Civil Guard were involved.
The devastating fire took place on August 4 of last summer, very close to the Caserío de Urgel Urbanization, in the province of Segovia. The flames charred 387 hectares of vegetation. All this surface is within protected natural spaces of the Natura 2000 network, of which 274 ha are included in the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, of high ecological value. Almost all of the burned area was in the province of Segovia, although it entered the Community of Madrid.
This incident forced the declaration Level 2 of danger INFOCAL, participating in its extinction a very extensive operation made up of a multitude of human and material resources from the different administrations. The Military Emergency Unit (UME) had to be deployed on the spot. The flames were brought under control on the fourth day and the fire was completely extinguished on August 21. During the following weeks, work continued on the recovery of the land, seriously damaged by the magnitude of the event.
The Civil Guard thanks the citizen collaboration, key on this occasion to help clarify the event and remember to take extreme precautions to prevent future fires this summer
The investigation has been carried out by SEPRONA agents of the Segovia Civil Guard, with the collaboration of the Organic Unit of the Judicial Police, the Central Operational Unit (UCO), the Cynological Service, Citizen Security officers and a technical specialist in Forest Fire investigation of the Ministry of the Environment of the Junta de Castilla y León.
This investigation has been directed by the head of the Investigating Court No. 3 of Segovia.
