The General Director of the Civil Guard, María Gámez, has handed over to the Director of the Memorial Center for the Victims of Terrorism, Florencio Domínguez, and in the presence of the businessman's family, a jamb of the closet located in the house in Lyon (France ) where Publio Cordón was kidnapped and inside which there are some inscriptions made by him in which he was counting the days of captivity. This piece will be exhibited in one of the rooms of the Center located in Vitoria.
During the inspection of the home, the Information Service of the Civil Guard together with their French counterparts from the DGSI located inside one of the cabinets the jamb with the inscriptions that were checked by the Corps Criminalistics Service, which confirmed that the writing belonged to Publio Cordón.
This jamb, together with the expert report, was used in 2018 in the trial against the terrorists who allegedly participated in the kidnapping, José Antonio Ramón Teijelo and María Victoria Gómez being convicted for it. In total there were 7 people convicted of this kidnapping.
The Director General highlighted with her words that “the presence today of the Civil Guard in this Center for Memory is a sign of the Corps's respect for the victims and the memory of this country in those tragic episodes that have accompanied us and that fortunately they are already part of the past "
María Gámez has highlighted in relation to the kidnapping of Publio Cordón that, “one of the main characteristics of the Civil Guard is that it never abandons an investigation and that although the case is closed in court, it will not give up its efforts until it can locate the businessman's body and to be able to put an end to all this work and the tranquility of the family ”.
The Foundation Center for the Memory of the Victims of Terrorism is a foundation of the state public sector attached to the Ministry of the Interior that aims to preserve and disseminate the democratic and ethical values embodied by the victims of terrorism, build the collective memory of the victims and raise awareness among the population to defend freedom and human rights and against terrorism.
VI Seminar on the Fight Against Terrorism
María Gámez has also inaugurated the VI Seminar on the Fight Against Terrorism under the title “Adaptation of the Civil Guard in the fight against ETA, 40th anniversary of the Ispaster attack”.
In the seminar, which was held virtually at the facilities of the Basque Country Zone in Vitoria, the General Director, the Government Delegate in the Autonomous Community, Denis Itxaso; the Chief General of the Information Office, Valentín Díaz; and the historian and researcher of the Center for the Memory of the Victims of Terrorism, Gaizka Fernández Soldevilla.
During the Seminar, a documentary video (which includes an infographic) was shown on the attack committed by the terrorist group ETA and where six civil guards were assassinated, when they were escorting weapons from the Marquina arms factory.
María Gámez stressed that it was unknown, at the time of the Ispaster attack, that 1980 would be the bloodiest year for ETA in Spain, with nearly a hundred fatalities and twice as many terrorist attacks. That year, 33 were agents of the Civil Guard. But the murder in Ispaster of the six civil guards, the cruelty of the murderers, shocked Spanish society and marked a milestone, a before and an after in the fight against terrorism … New Information and Investigation units were created and for the control of the territory, and others were promoted. He also recalled the names of the six victims shot on the Ispaster highway: Alfredo Díez Marcos, José Gómez Martiñán, José Gómez Trillo, Antonio Marín Gamero, José Martínez Pérez-Castilla and Victorino Villamor González.
The Director General has stated that with this seminar, within the cycle of online conferences on Security Culture that the Civil Guard is promoting, we are helping to recover their memory. That of the victims of the Ispaster attack. But also that of all the others. "Without memory there is no future, recovering it is an obligation, and we have the responsibility to disclose the story as it happened, without revisions, reinterpretations or biased stories," he added.
María Gámez ended her speech with a memory full of affection, gratitude and respect for the victims of terrorism. “I want to tell you that you are not alone, that the Civil Guard continues to work so that history does not repeat itself and to clarify the attacks that remain unsolved, because in this way memory is preserved, and claiming memory is talking about peace, the future, of coexistence and hope ”.
