María Gámez is the first woman to be appointed Director General of the Civil Guard in her 175 years of history

The Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, presided this Wednesday the act of inauguration of María Gámez as the new Director General of the Civil Guard, “the first woman at the helm of the Benémerita”, as highlighted by the minister, who trust "not the last one".

"I am convinced that you will be the beacon of all those women who already accompany you within the Body and of all those who will follow your example in the future," he said.
The head of Interior, who has also thanked "the intense dedication" of outgoing Felix Azón, has been convinced that Gámez will have in his mandate "the opportunity to print to the Civil Guard part of his personal seal". "You receive a legacy formed over 175 years of history that concludes having the Civil Guard as the most valued institution and the most trusted by the Spanish," he said.

María Gámez has thanked for her part the confidence that the Government of Spain has placed in her, in an intervention in which she has stated that “she puts herself with humility at the head of the Institution” and has committed “work, dialogue and respect for the essence and traditions that the Body has, while looking to the future to face, in a prepared way, the complex 21st century. ”

The fight against gender violence will continue to be the "main battle" of Gámez who has recalled in his speech the last victim of sexist violence. Other challenges will be organized crime, cybercrime, the environment or climate change.

It has also highlighted among its objectives the vertebration of Spain. After affirming that “a civil guard arrives where no one arrives”, the director general has stressed the importance of the Institution in the coexistence of the country or in the search for solutions for 'Spain emptied': “Our presence in the territory is one of our strengths, but the challenge that lies ahead is that it be done more and more with a guarantee of quality and efficiency ”.

Gámez, who has confessed feminist, has advanced that the Area of ​​Women and Equality of the Civil Guard will be a strategic piece to accelerate the incorporation of women into the Body, improve their socio-labor conditions and promote significant progress in the Equality Plan . "Women are half of the population and we cannot conform to the current reality," he said.

After thanking the work of his predecessor in office, Félix Azón, the new director general has expressed that his main companion on the road to travel is human capital: “The men and women of the Civil Guard who should feel that the institution takes care of them and respect them. " In that sense, María Gámez has concluded: “we will listen, talk and try to reach the maximum possible consensus, while ensuring that the public service is what the citizens deserve”.

CURRICULUM

María Gámez was born in Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz) in 1969. She is the first woman to take charge of the General Directorate of the Civil Guard. Until now, she was subdelegate of the Government in the province of Malaga, being also the first woman to hold the position.

She has a law degree from the University of Malaga. In addition, she is a university expert in Constitutional Sanitary Law and a graduate of the Senior Business Management Program of the San Telmo International Institute.

The new director general of the Civil Guard is a civil servant of the Superior Body of General Administrators of the Junta de Andalucía and has developed her professional work in the Junta de Andalucía, in the Parliament of Andalusia, in the office of the Ombudsman of Andalusia and in the Malaga's town hall. She was also a delegate of the Government of the Junta de Andalucía in Málaga.
